Qualitative potentials of bee products
Bee products have a long history of medicinal use. All cultures have folk or traditional medicine traditions that include the use of bee products, like honey, bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax and bee venom. These products have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and antioxidant activities. Natural bee products have also been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells and cause apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells. Hence, these biologically active natural products may be useful in the treatment of cancer. Based on recent studies and consumption of bee products, it is understood that the quality of bee and honey products should be determined and graded in terms of physiological functions of materials and their valid components. These compounds and agents can include the type and quantity of polyphenols, antioxidant effect, antibacterial effect, the amount of specific proteins in honey and royal jelly, the type and amount of honey enzymes, as well as the amount of specific substances related to the plant or their therapeutic effect.
